A modern-day caucus race
The “AI race”, Silicon Valley’s favorite spectator sport in the last 2 years, is now a world-wide competition.
But, while everyone’s obsessing over GenAI, other fields of AI research — ones that could actually solve pressing global problems — are being overshadowed.
Where’s the hype for AI in healthcare, climate modeling, or education?
Where’s the race to develop AI that helps us tackle inequality, improve public services, or address the climate crisis?
“Why,” said the Dodo, “the best way to explain it is to do it.”
This “race” feels less like a marathon and more like the Caucus Race from Alice in Wonderland. For those who haven’t read it (or need a refresher), the Caucus Race is a chaotic, nonsensical event where everyone runs in circles, there’s no clear finish line, and at the end, the Dodo declares, “Everybody has won, and all must have prizes!”
In today’s AI race, we’re all running in circles, chasing the promise of “innovation.” But instead of prizes, we risk getting:
- AI tools that confidently generate nonsense (because nothing says “progress” like a machine hallucinating its way through a meeting agenda)
- Layoffs (because why pay humans when you can have a chatbot do the…
