Buzzwords alone would not suffice: the decision to "adopt Agile" is often taken by Management with a genuine desire to make things better, and adopting a standardized methodology promoted by consultants seems to be a reasonable approach to make it faster. The problem is, in my opinion, that the "Agile methodologies" (the way they are packaged and sold) are too keen to create new processes and rituals that, as you point out, are not consistent with the principles.
