Decoding the ‘Not-My-Job’ Mindset

A deep dive into what fuels workplace apathy

The Abdicator is the personification of the “not my job” attitude, inspired by the flamboyant supervillains populating Batman’s Gotham City.

Have you ever wondered if a supervillain could teach us valuable lessons about workplace attitudes?

I recently explored this concept by embodying a supervillain character who personifies the infamous ‘not-my-job’ attitude. This character made its debut in my presentation at the Finance 4.0 Transformation Summit, and I further expanded on its intriguing backstory in a published article.

While the idea of a supervillain in the corporate world might sound humorous, it serves a deeper purpose: to reflect about the underlying causes of such a negative mindset in the workplace. Understanding and empathizing with these root causes might be the key to identify effective strategies to transform a disengaged team member into a positive and proactive contributor.

The emergence of a “not my job” attitude in an otherwise positive individual can be attributed to various root causes, spanning both personal and organizational factors.

Understanding these causes is crucial for addressing the issue effectively.
