Europe’s Sputnik Moment for AI
Beyond hallucinations: why Apertus is the first truly trustworthy LLM
Remember when DeepSeek was called a “Sputnik moment”?
Not because it was the fastest or most accurate model, but because it proved something bigger: that the AI race was no longer just about Silicon Valley.
A system from China, built with different technology and consuming far less energy, showed that the U.S. giants were not unreachable.
Like the original Sputnik in 1957, it jolted the world into realizing the rules of competition had changed.
The release of Apertus, Switzerland’s first large-scale open, multilingual language model, deserves no less attention — but for a different reason.
Apertus’ Sputnik moment is not about competition between countries, but about values. Apertus is the first open-source large language model built to comply with the EU AI Act by design. Compliance isn’t patched on after launch, or left for deployers to figure out. It is embedded in the architecture.
Just as DeepSeek forced us to rethink who could lead in AI, Apertus forces us to rethink what leadership in AI should mean…
